Are steriods a good thing?
http://a.espncdn.com/
We all know that steroids can be a bad thing. It is cheating the game and everyone involved with it. However, they can benefit a large amount of people. Some people can even make the argument that the MLB should legalize steroids and let players choose if they want to use. Forbes makes an argument for legalizing steroids stating that “legalizing PEDs would make life much easier for professional sports organizations currently tasked with managing convoluted anti-doping policies.” Not only would this be a financial benefit for the teams it would also be more exciting to watch.
If you ask anyone who knows anything about baseball they will tell you that the most exciting play is a towering home run from their favorite player. A home run can change the entire swing of the game and its one of the main reasons people come to baseball games. It’s a proven fact that people get stronger from taking drugs. When players get stronger they hit more home runs. According to Sbnation five of the 25 players who lead the all time list of home runs have taken steroids. What this site doesn’t show is how much the team benefits from these players taking steroids. At at least one point in time 4 of the five players led the league in most popular jersey.
Not only do they receive money via jersey sales, but the overall value of a player goes up. Most GMs think of their players as assets. Theses assets can either appreciate or decline over time. With the use of steroids the value of these players will go up causing the player to be worth more. The GM can then get more money and players for that player.
Even though there are all of these Pros steroids should not be used in professional baseball. The bottom line is they affect the overall health of they players. It’s almost inhumane to make them legal. Players would feel the need to take steroids just because everyone else is. Not only will it cause professionals to use steroids, but young players will look up to their idols and feel the need to take steroids just to succeed. The MLB has done just fine up to this point and shouldn’t feel the need to change the game.In my next post I will talk about how players affect the public, and their image after being caught using steriods.

How to suceed in the MLB

Getting to the MLB is tough. Many people play baseball throughout their lives hoping to someday make it to the MLB. To make it that far players need to have lots of skill and god given talent. When skill and talent doesn’t get you far enough to make it to the show people start moving towards other things. Some people like Albert Pujols will work on their swing for hours upon hours perfecting it, that is one of the reasons why he is so successful, but there are some players who don’t have the work ethic and drive of Pujols. Players like Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun who were blessed with god given talent resort to other things, steriods. I’m not saying that these players don’t work hard because I am sure that they do, but they resort to steroids to give them the competitive advantage over the other players. They choose out of their own self interest to take steroids just to get a higher paycheck.
Accoding to the "MLB's Joint Drug Prevention And Treatment Program" The rules that the league puts a “30 day reduction on a players salery” for their first time being caught for using steriods. However, after that 30 day reduction the player can go back to receiving their full contract again and even has the ability to receive more money via a future contract. Along with the 30 day reduction they put an 80 game ban on players. It takes till the third time being caught for the league to do something drastic, for a “Third violation (players receive a) Permanent suspension from Major League and Minor League Baseball; provided, however, that a Player so suspended may apply, no earlier than one year following the imposition of the suspension, to the Commissioner for discretionary reinstatement after a minimum period of two (2) years”. People who are caught cheating the game, their teammates, players, fans, and their organizations should not have the chance to mess up three times before drastic actions take place.
In my next blog post I will go in depth on how much everyone benefits from players who use steroids. Then after I list all of these reasons I will talk about how they are poorly affected when they get caught.

An Unfair Advantage
http://crimeblog.dallasnews.com/files/2015/09/steroids.jpg
Throughout the article “Anabolic Steroids and Sports:Winning at any cost” written by the Department of Health of the state of New York, they talk about how the use of steroids affect the overall well being of athletes who use steroids. Along with all of the effects of steroids it talks about why some athletes choose to take use performance enhancing drugs. It’s not just professionals that take steroids too, more and more younger athletes are starting to use steroids.Along with professional athletes trying to get an advantage on the game, people as young as high schoolers are using steroids to get ahead of the game. According to fox news over five to twelve percent of high schoolers use steroids to get bigger. These are just the reported case. High schools are not required to test their students so many are using and not getting caught.
On a more professional level people are using steroids all the time. In the same fox news article it states that at some point in time over 34% of semi pro baseball players have used steroids. I can understand why people in the minors would use, however it is stupid because you are going to get caught and it is bad for your health.

Performance Enhancing Drugs
Source:http://www.rnntv.com/sites/
- Briefly explain why you are interested in studying your topic:
- I play sports and the concept of people cheating to get better has always interested me. Not only does it make the player more money due to his high performance but it also makes the organization more profitable because people will want to come to more game and buy jerseys, generating revenue for the team. How players get caught and get the drugs in the first place has always had my interest since Alex Rodriguez was caught using growth hormones just over two years from now. Also things like punishments for getting caught intrigues me. The fines and suspensions seem like they are not fit for the crime some athletes are committing.
- The overall question I plan on answering by the end of the project:
- How does performance enhancing drugs have an impact on how teams and players generate revenue.
- Sub questions I will need to answer in order to answer the overall question:
- How many athletes are suspected of cheating
- How do organizations benefit/how to they suffer
- How can you tell they are juicing
- Of the people cheating how many are doing well
- My plan of research (what specific Library Databases, specific websites, names of authors, people, etc. will I pursue to find the answers to the questions above):
- I know there are lots of studies done by baseball insider, Tim Kurkjian, so I will seek out the studies him and all of his colleagues have done on the internet. There are also lots of studies done on health websites like Men’s health and Mayo clinic.
